2 - Reflect
Why is it that we mostly direct our prayers to God to asking rather than to giving thanks? I generally believe that it is part of human nature to focus attention on those things we lack rather than on those things we have. In other words, we become accustomed in a sense to complaining about what we have not achieved, rather than giving thanks for what we have been given and have achieved.
Changing our perspective is the way to begin to cultivate a spirit of gratitude, to begin to realize each blessing that the Lord has placed in our lives and to give thanks for each one of them is to align ourselves with the will that He has for us and it is also a powerful tool to have more trusting relationships with those around us. The word of the Lord takes gratitude to a deeper level by teaching us that the act of giving thanks means glory and honor to the one who fills us with those blessings. Thus, to give thanks to the Lord is to honor and glorify him.
To remain calm and confident that his hand will sustain us when we fall is to strengthen our faith in him. To be thankful for his presence both in bitter times and in times of plenty is to accept his guidance and care. So let us begin today to focus on the good things in our lives and at the same time express to God our gratitude for all that He has given us.
